Cover Letter

Hello Hiring Committee,

Please consider my application for Darkness to Light: Communication intern. I believe I possess the skills you require and think I would be a good fit for your organization.

The position you have posted would be an honor to obtain. It combines my love of non-profit work and my skills and interest in journalism. You will notice that I have plenty of global experience on my resume, meaning I am willing to travel anywhere to get the story. I also have strong written and communication skills, meaning I can write in many different styles and make connections and network quickly.

Let me explain why I believe I would be a good fit for your organization. In my Junior year of college, one of my professors said, "As college students, you will be going out into your job fields in the next two years, and it's up to you to change the world." I admired my teachers' sense of optimism towards our generation. My professor received her graduate degree at Northeastern in journalism and spent years chasing down stories before teaching communication at the College of Charleston. It was my professor who inspired me to follow my passion for writing and storytelling. I focused on telling stories through a positive lens and displaying an uplifting side to humanity that numerous social media platforms don't show. My professor gave me a deep sense of passion and sympathy for people. Most of all, she taught me how to be kind in a world where we are surrounded by sadness.

I want to illustrate the abilities I can bring to Darkness to Light by discussing a piece I wrote for my Communications Analysis and Context class. We were asked to write an essay that illustrated how the media impacts journalism today. I decided to branch out from the simple prompt and write a narration piece on how negative news physiologically affects young adults. Although there were many late nights, my strong work drive and passion for the writing made it successful. My teacher was astonished by how moving my article was; she offered to help me get it published, something she had never done for a student before. Additionally, one of the women I interviewed, Courtney Spence, was impressed by my insightful contribution and sharp ideas that she offered me an internship at her advertising and marketing company CSPENCE Group for Summer 2020.

It would be an honor and a delight to work for your company and continue my dream of educating people through the power of written voice and word.

Sincerely,

Maddie Heid
